You discover an irresistible surge
A wild buffalo at a gallop
A necessary pause.
A mutual recognition.
Moving forward together
You enter the heart of the cave
Dark, inviting, dangerous.
Traveling through this darkness
You emerge unified and empowered
With a new strength:
The horns of power.

Dangerous, impetuous, unbridled, we discover within ourselves this deep, mysterious, and indomitable impulse in which our deepest aspirations and our most violent desires clash. We must neither eradicate it nor yield to it; taming it thus leads to a great strength that must be born in silence and the night.

The verticality of the previous Rune is countered here by a horizontal dynamic, but also by a container, a matrix, a place of generation. While the energy in Fehu was directed upward along this vertical axis, here the direction of the force is one of an inclination toward the earth—the aurochs’ inclination, but also a fertilizing inclination. The slanting branches of Fehu, incandescent sparks, have become a smoldering, creative fire in the depths.

In Fehu we encountered the fire that animates all life, that fertilizes us and transcends us. Here, this force revealing itself within us encounters form and seeks to infuse it, giving substance to the capacities we sense. Thus, in these first two runes, there is a perception of their complementarity— . If Fehu is the impulse, the fertilizing, driving energy, Uruz is the form without which this impulse cannot be embodied.

The image of the Bull, slow to set in motion, then aggressive, and finally tamed and integrated, is the initial mutual recognition of Fire and Ice. Fire, in its expansive dynamic, encounters ice in its coagulating force: there is an initial clash. Fire drives evolution; Ice drives inertia and conservation.

The bull represents the inertia of our psychosomatic complex, generating forces that react to the initial impulse but also serving as a colossal reservoir of energy that prolongs and roots this impulse—a condensation of our volitional and instinctive energies. The bull is slow to start and brutal in its awakening, but once awakened, it generates an irresistible dynamic.
Uruz requires passing through a phase of confrontation before integration. If this confrontation is too brutal, the emergence within us and around us of this primal energy can frighten us and provoke flight or fight. But through trust in the inner strength arising from the Fire in Fehu—the primordial spark within us—and the deep conviction that fusion with form is possible, it calms and carries us on our journey.
Here, recognizing such a force means realizing that it is a constituent of who we are—a blend of desires and deep aspirations. If we have succeeded in bringing this primordial force into consciousness without letting ourselves be swept away, then a first fertilization occurs within the lair of Uruz, a first weaving in which the force takes shape and the thread of destiny solidifies.
Within us, this primordial energy then finds a matrix in which to incarnate. Thus, the conjunction of channeled violence and energized inertia becomes a powerful engine animating the vessel that will carry us to our destination: the initial force of Fire combined with the mass of Ice becomes Power. Then emerges the still-formless awareness of a purpose that encompasses all parts of our being.
